Two Garlic Recipes You Need To Kick Your Cold

Garlic in a recipe is amazing! Especially when you’re sick.

It’s a potent antimicrobial, and studies suggest it may even help ward off the common cold. Garlic contains a sulfur compound called allicin which blocks enzymes that play a role in bacterial and viral infections. But who wants to chow down on a clove when they’re sick? You want chicken noodle soup, not a big plate of garlicky Italian food while you’re lounging on the couch!

Don’t worry, that’s not what I’m suggesting you do. The most effective way to get garlic into your system is to crush it and place it under your tongue. But I’m not suggesting you do that either because…yuck! I’m sharing a cocktail and soup recipe for you to try next time you or your family is under the weather. They’re perfect recipes to sneak it into your system to ward off any cold coming your way.

Here are the two simple recipes to help you get garlic into your system to your next cold at bay.

1.Garlic Cocktail

To make a garlic cocktail, simply use one of Maty’s Natural or Organic Cough Syrups. Since my cough syrup is made with honey, it helps mask the flavor of garlic. Use one bottle of Maty’s Cough Syrup and add some crushed cloves. Blend it in a food processor until smooth. Take two teaspoons as needed.

2. Garlic Soup

Soup is the ultimate comfort food, especially if you are experiencing cold symptoms. This recipe is made with more than 50 cloves of garlic, onions, thyme and lemon so it will stop almost any virus in its path!

  • 26 garlic cloves ((unpeeled))
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) organic butter (grass fed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder
  • 1/2 cup fresh ginger
  • 2 1/4 cups sliced onions
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
  • 26 garlic cloves (, peeled)
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 3 1/2 cups organic vegetable broth
  • 4 lemon wedges
  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Place 26 garlic cloves in small glass baking dish. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and toss to coat. Cover baking dish tightly with foil and bake until garlic is golden brown and tender, about 45 minutes. Cool. Squeeze garlic between fingertips to release cloves. Transfer cloves to small bowl.
  2. Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions, thyme, ginger and cayenne powder and cook until onions are translucent, about 6 minutes. Add roasted garlic and 26 raw garlic cloves and cook 3 minutes. Add vegetable broth; cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 20 minutes. Working in batches, puree soup in blender until smooth. Return soup to saucepan; add coconut milk and bring to simmer. Season with sea salt and pepper for flavour.
  3. Squeeze juice of 1 lemon wedge into each bowl and serve.
  4. Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

No one enjoys being sick with the cold or flu. It’s even worse when you hear news about viral infections going around. My advice is to keep calm and be prepared to fight off infections and try a garlic cocktail or a fresh bowl of soup at the first sign of the sniffles.
