As the founder of an all natural company, I am careful about the ingredients I use in my products. I want to be sure when people use my products they know the ingredients are pure, simple and natural.
When I developed the formula for my baby ointment, I had a dilemma to consider.
If I wanted the ointment to have a clean, fresh, natural aroma, I would have to add fragrance to the formula that would jeopardize its integrity.
But guess what happened? Solving my dilemma gave my ointment a surprising healing benefit.
The Fragrance Quandry
I loved the smell of coconut and considered adding it to my all natural baby ointment. But adding a fragrance to a product can jeopardize its integrity because of what is in a fragrance.
Fragrances are defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a combination of chemicals that give it a distinct scent.
That’s it!
Which means fragrances can be derived from many things including petroleum, phthalates, solvents, or chemical stabilizers just to name a few.
What’s worse is that the FDA does not require a manufacturer to list the ingredients on a product label because of “trade secrets.”
For instance, a lemon fragrance may not have any lemon in it. Coconut in its natural state does not have an aroma, so ingredients are combined to create the smell of coconut.
Even the Environmental Working Group (EWG) is leery of fragrances. Natural products are given a score by the EWG. They reduce that score if the product lists any fragrances on the label.
If moms were going to feel confident using my ointment, I felt they needed to know what’s in it. That’s why I elected to leave out any fragrance in my baby ointment.
Therapeutic Benefits of a Baby Ointment
And you know what happened? I created a safe ointment that is not only ideal for a baby’s bottom; it can be used as the base for other healing balms too!
Making your DIY ointment can be tricky though. There is an art to combining waxes and oils to create a creamy texture that is easily applied to the skin.
You won’t have to with Maty’s. Because it doesn’t have any fragrance added, you are free to add whatever essential oils you desire to create all types of healing balms.
Here are a few of my favorite healing ointments:
Pick Me Up Ointment
Can be used as an early morning pick me up. Mix a few drops of refreshing Orange and Ginger Essential Oils with my baby ointment, then stir. Apply it to your skin to energize your morning!
Keeping Calm Ointment
Can be used to help you relax before bedtime. Mix a few drops of Lavender, Roman Chamomile, or Valerian Essential Oils with my baby ointment and apply to skin. It will help you settle in for a good night’s rest. Since it curbs inflammation, some people have had great results promoting the healing of their Eczema.
Immune Boosting Ointment
Frankincense and Lemongrass Essential Oils offer a variety of health benefits. Mix a few drops of these two healing oils with my baby ointment and apply it to your skin for a powerful way to boost your immune system.
BONUS: While my ointment doesn’t contain fragrance, there’s no reason you can’t add your own natural aroma. Here are a few of my favorite scents for an ointment.
A Delightfully Fragrant Ointment
Want a beautiful smelling ointment? Mix a few drops of some fragrant Rose, Jasmine or Grapefruit Essential Oils with my baby ointment to leave a fresh scent on your skin.
